The Girona Food Guide

I wanted to keep this list a tad lighter than it actually is, but the truth is that there are just so many great different options to eat in town, that I have mainly narrowed it down to the ones I like to frequent, and the ones that are local enough yet not tourist tailored; those did not make the list. Following this list, I will also post a blog about the main go to coffee places as that is what we all search for when we get to a new town, right? Okay, maybe it’s just me then. Standards.

In no particular order, the following are visit worthy despite what Trip Advisor may tell you, in regards to ranking and what’s what. This is a list that I also wish I had access to when I first moved to Girona, 3 years ago. I moved here like a deer in the headlights. not knowing anyone, not knowing anything about cycling and not knowing anything about literally anything; just that it was the place to be in the winter time, if you wanted to ride your bike. So waste no time on google - here is your go to list :)

La Comuna - One of my main go to’s mainly because two of my good friends, Joana and Assango work there. It offers absolutely everything from great breakfast options, to post ride options and decent specialty coffee. You go here for the atmosphere and because of the location as it’s known as one of the meeting spots for group rides since it’s on the edge of Old Town.

Federal - Classic stop right in Old Town, for breakfast and lunches that will hit all the spots. I think I’ve had everything on their menu from their chicken sandwiches, to their pasta, and their smoothies.

Idle Hands - Idle hands has great coffee, great wine, great burgers, great food; I wish they were open 24/7 - Owned by the best Belgian couple in town, it is the place to be especially because they also host cool parties sometimes AND they sell really great speciality coffee beans.

Ditifet - Affordable go to for fancy steak dinners, and local Catalan / Spanish Tapas and all other dinner related items, including great local wine. It’s where I go take everyone that comes to visit.

SiNoFos - If I had to compare their steaks to a car brand, I would say they are the Aston Martins in the steak and food places in Girona. You will need an advance booking, preferable a week ahead if you’d like to find a spot. Absolutely Unreal. More on the fancy date side but worth every penny.

Apple Cafe - Sushi lovers, this is all I have to say. Yes, there are others in town but are not to be compared.

Bartali Pizza - Solid Pizza place and location, but you need a reservation as they are mostly booked every evening. Great for group events and get-togethers as they will set tables outside for you if you have a larger outing.

Barri Vell Pizza - Located near La Comuna, this was one of the better options to order for delivery or pick up - affordable and unreal options for toppings.

Cipresaia - Michelin but affordable. Great wine. Great place. Great people. My own personal favourite of all time. Roasted eggplant, Negronis, Steak (on their seasonal menu). Fancy but casual, with a side of papayas bravos that are to die for.

Kan Ramen - Ramen but proper ramen. Not chain restaurant ramen where they gave up on their lives, but instead prepared in front of you, with all their blood sweat and love. SO GOOD. Must have reservation as it’s a tiny little place just outside of old town. Worth the walk.

Hors Categorie - Cyclist central for all things fries, tacos, curry, coffee and cakes. Bike Lover Cafe; this is the place to be when you want to watch any grand tours or just look at the memorabilia on the wall. Their Sweet Potato Wedges are amaaaazing.

Beers & Bagels - Local. Freaking good. Name speaks for itself.

Mola - Hand made fresh pasta like you’ve never had before. Wish you had an Italian grandma cooking for you? Go here - except it’s Vittorio, and he’s REALLY good at channeling his inner Italian G-Ma when he makes you all the goodies.

La Puntual - Bread, Bakery, Sweets, all in one. the main place to go and buy your bread. Do not waste your time going anywhere else. Their sourdough is used throughout Girona at diff restaurants as it really is THAT good.

La Garrina - Local wine, where everyone gets together most nights. They have snacks but offer an Asian style menu on Thursday evenings; try the spring rolls with your order. You will def go back.

Bestia - Another wine and tapas place that has unreal roasted eggplants, bravas and other dishes that make it a cute date place that is mainly centred around wine.

Omis Foods - Pop up food, boutique catering availble. Omer is a former cycling pro and she is an amazing cook and bakes the most amazing things that I’ve had the pleasure of trying while at Oniria Coffee. You can check her out on instagram and get in touch as each week offers different home made options, available for pick up at an attractive price. @OmisFoods on insta.

Hotel Ultonia - This is my main and only Negroni recommendation. Rooftop bar with a proper bar tender that actually knows his Sh*t. I’ve tried a negroni almost everywhere in town and this is now the only place I venture out to when I don’t make my own.

Hope this helps a little :)
X Alex
